Can I Update the Website on My Own?

1) Take a course on Dreamweaver

You can take a course on Dreamweaver, if you have the time, there are many courses offered by computer schools and they are fairly affordable.

2) Learn it yourself

If you are someone who is good with picking up softwares (like word, excel and powerpoint) and you are the type that can sit down and go through the tutorials and the help files to learn how to use a software, we will recommend that you get a copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver.

The areas that you should focus on are:

  • connecting to the server
  • storing of files
  • copying and pasting text to existing pages
  • saving and uploading of files to the server

If you intend to up load pictures on your own, you will also need to learn how to use a graphics editor, like Adobe Photoshop, to resize the image, so that you will not be uploading raw images that take up too much space and choke up the bandwidth.

The functions to learn in Adobe Photoshop for you to do this are:

  • resizing and image
  • saving an image for web publishing purpose

It is fairly easy to learn, the tutorials are very comprehensive and there are also tons of websites dedicated to teaching dreamweaver out there. However, you will need time and determination to do this.

Whatever you do, always remember: CREATE BACKUPS!

3) Take a Crash course when you use our design services

You can also take a 2 hour crash course with us when you take up a deisgn package with us and we will hand hold you through the basics like copying and pasting text, uploading simple photos and files using Macromedia Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop. (ofcourse you will have to get a copy of the ORIGINAL softwares).

Also if you engage our sevices, we will have a copy of the original files with us, so if you mess up your site, we will still have the previous copy with us. That has proved to be very useful in a few occassions.

4) No time and no Interest

If you have no time and no interest to learn Dreamweaver, Photoshop or other softwares, it is still best to leave these tasks to the profesionals. Make sure you find out about maintenance charges when you sign up with your design firm, they are usually in the region of 15% of your development costs per annum, and will include updating of text and graphics (up to a certain number of pages a year), or a per update page charge of about $75 per page.
